DIY ~ To get rid of Black and White heads!

Black heads and white heads — those pesky little dots on your nose and chin that are too stubborn to get off! We might not realise but black or white heads do take the charm away from our faces. In this post, I try to go in detail about why do those tiny things appear on our faces and what can we do to get rid of them — forever and ever!

First things first — Why do we get blackheads and Whiteheads?

Blackheads are caused by overactive sebaceous glands which produce an excess of sebum — when there is an excessive production of sebum, it forms lump under the skin with the grease and dirt that is already present on the skin. This hardens and when oxidized with air ,it turns black forming blackheads.

Some other reasons are:

  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Excess Makeup
  • Pollution
  • Ageing
  • Improper Diet

Even to this day I follow the tips given by my mother which were collected from riches of Ayurveda. Nature is filled with profound magic which has remedies for almost every aliment.

Before following any remedy for black and Whitehead removal, it is best to take steam vaporization which opens up the pores and eases the removal of the blackheads and whiteheads. If you are not able to take steam, I would suggest that you at least wash your face with warm water.

For the best results, apply the below herbal mixtures immediately after you are done with steaming. In case you are left with excess of the product, you can apply it on your entire face, hands, feet or any part of the body. It is completely safe and natural and most of the times you do not have to worry about side effects. Having said that, I would still encourage you to take a patch test — just to be doubly sure!

Without much further ado, let us talk about the remedies:

Remedy 1:

  • Oatmeal – 1 Tablespoon
  • Tomato pulp – 1 Tablespoon
  • Lemon – 1 TablespoonBlack and White heads
Oats were excessively used by ancient Romans and Egyptians to combat skin issues like acne. Oats contain beta-glucan, which according to Wikipedia are “biological response modifiers” because of their ability to activate the immune system. It absorbs oil from the skin and also moisturizes the skin well.
Mix all the ingredients and apply it on your face. Leave it for 30 minutes and wash your face with warm water.
Remedy 2:

  • Cinnamon powder-1 Tablespoon
  • Clove powder – 2 Tablespoon
  • Rose water – 1 TablespoonBlack and White heads1
Apply this spice mixture on the affected areas. It might sting a bit though. Leave the paste for 20-30 minutes. Scrub your face with lukewarm water and wash it afterwards. Cinnamon and Clove are antiseptic and anti-fungal in nature. They can work magic on your skin!
Remedy 3:
  • Rice flour – 1 Tablespoon
  • Turmeric – 1 Tablespoon
  • Yoghurt – 1 TablespoonBlack and White heads2
Turmeric is a divine herb. It also finds place in our tradition.  An Indian wedding custom is to apply turmeric paste to the bride and groom so that they have glowing skins. Considering how important wedding ceremonies are to us Indians, you can understand the importance of this bright yellow spice.
Yoghurt moisturizes the skin. It keeps the skin soft and supple.
Rice flour helps to exfoliate the dead skin and eases the removal of blackheads and whiteheads.
Just as mentioned above, mix all the ingredients and apply it on your face. Leave the paste on for 20 minutes and finally wash away by gently scrubbing it from the skin.
I hope I was able to help you in finding a solution to an annoying skin problem. Let me know if you found the above tips as useful as I did. Also, I would like to hear more from you about which particular skin problem you would want me to give a solution to from my DIY repertoire. I’ll be glad to help!
