How to Pose – In Western Vs Indian Wear

I have done most of my outfit shoots outdoors and trust me finding a right place and time for the photoshoot is the hardest part of fashion blogging. The reason I don’t do indoor shoots is one because A) Being outdoors gives a natural touch to the pictures and B) you need multiple resources like lighting, backdrop etc. But the best part about an indoor shoot is that changing is convenient and I can have more than one outfit changes. I also get to stay in a relatively cooler place (It’s unbearably hot in Bangalore right now!) and get the shoot done easily. Working closely with some DOP’s recently, I understand how important the lighting is — be it indoor or outdoor.

Here is my first post in an indoor shoot done by my amazing photographer friend Santosh. A lot of people love getting their photo shoots done but most of them end up standing awkwardly not knowing what to do with themselves. Interestingly, “How to Pose in front of the camera” is a common question I am asked and today I answer this question with 2 different looks.

• Make sure to have a friendly photographer. If you are comfortable with that person it becomes easy to be your natural self.
• Keep your back straight, no one ever looked good while slouching.
• Take a deep breath and tuck in your stomach; however flat your stomach is, if you don’t pose right, at least a tiny tummy bulge is seen.
• If you are conscious of the camera, play music in the background and just enjoy the music while getting clicked. It takes away your fear of the camera. If you are not a music person, think about happy things or take along your favorite person. The idea is to relax and have fun.

Coming to my western outfit, I have worn a heart print shift dress paired with a block heel shoes. My makeup is minimal with a CC Cream, a compact powder, and a lipstick. I don’t really apply kajal or eye liner unless it is necessary. I have kept the postures in a western outfit as fun and chic. I had my favourite music on and was happily posing as my photographer did his shutter job.

When you want to get an Indian/Ethnic wear shoot done, make sure to accessorise. I have a bubbly yet shy attitude in my Indian outfit representing the next door girl look. Also, remember that Jhumkas and Bangles play an important role while dressing up ethnic.
