Places to Visit In the Netherlands

Hey guys, I had been MIA here for more than 2 months; as I was working and traveling to a lot of cool places in Europe. You might have seen pictures on my Instagram and Facebook already. I was living in Amsterdam (Amstelveen which is a suburban part of Amsterdam) for 75 days and traveled to other beautiful cities in the Netherlands whenever I got time. I have jotted down in brief about the places I visited. Here is my list of some beautiful Places to Visit In the Netherlands.

1. Amsterdam: This is a city which most of the people dream to visit, Party and do things which are not legal in other countries. I had received a lot of hype from friends before traveling to Amsterdam. As you might have heard, it is the city for night life. There are very beautiful Canals which you must walk both during day and night. Rijks Museum, Dam Square and King’s Palace are a few of the tourist attractions. The famous Red Light District is very crowded during the weekends which I didn’t enjoy much but there are a few beer pubs with good music. Apart from Amsterdam Central, you should check out waterlooplein area for it’s famous Market, canals and some amazing Breweries.
   You can either take trams or just walk around to all these places near Amsterdam Central!

   

   

   

2. Rotterdam: This city is rebuilt after the world war II, hence you will see a lot of new style architecture here unlike other cities of the Netherlands. Rotterdam is also known for the Euromast, the highest lookout tower in the Netherlands, from 185 meters you can see till The Hague and Antwerp on a clear day. I visited the famous Cube houses and the very popular Markthal(Market hall), where you can buy souvenirs and lots of Dutch treats. I loved it’s Architecture, and also Erasmus Brug, the swan inspired Bridge. All these places you can cover by walk or by taking tram in one day as they are all closer to Central. If you have more than one day, you must visit Blijdorp Zoo, one of the most beautiful zoos in Europe, where you can walk through the different continents of the world and see the animals in their natural habitat.

   

   

   

   

3. Kinderdijk/Zaanse schans: If you want to witness the old style windmills and some country side feel, you can visit either Kinderdijk or Zaanse schans. Kinderdijk is a very small village closer to Rotterdam which hosts a lot of old style Windmills. It is also an official UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its important history. You can walk around in this beautiful place surrounded with water and windmills, they also have boat rides if one is interested. We drove to this place, but there are buses to this place. It can be covered along with Rotterdam as it needs only 2-3 hours.
   
   
   Zaanse Schans on the other hand is closer to Amsterdam and it displays a lot of traditional architecture  and has several functioning windmills, which are open to visitors. There are old green wooden houses and some huge wooden shoes to witness. You can plan for a quite picnic in this place.
4. The Hague( Den Hague in Dutch) : It is a place with historic architecture, government institutions and also has a beach to visit. So I suggest to travel here on a Sunnier day, so you chill at the beach after wandering around the city whole day. From the central station, you can either walk or take tram to Binnenhof  (“Inner Court”) – The complex of government buildings and home to the Dutch Parliament. Near to it within walkable distance is the  Mauritshuis (House of Maurits) and  Grote Kerk (Big Church). Take tram number 9 and go to Madurodam if you would love to see whole of Netherlands in a miniature version, the entry fees is 17 Euro. If not, continue on the same tram till last stop to chill at the Scheveningen Beach.

   

   
   

   

   PS: There is also a Beach in Harlem if you get to visit that city.

5. Maastricht: It is at the southern most part and claims to be the oldest city in the Netherlands. I loved visiting this place because of the architecture, culture and also I stayed on a boat. The shopping street here is just amazing as it has almost all the brand outlets. There are also plenty of old buildings with great architecture, lovely cathedrals and a spectacularly cobble-stoned town center.
   
   
6. Giethoorn: One of the main reasons to visit this village in the Netherlands is you have to travel across the village by boat through canals. They have recently added the cycling lanes, otherwise the villagers used to commute via boats itself. It is very refreshing and peaceful to visit this green and clean village.
   
7. Delft: This city is located in between The Hague and Rotterdam and has the famous Delft university. The city has two spectacular churches, medieval Oude Kerk and Nieuwe Kerk. Both of them have beautiful architecture and is very beautiful to visit. You can also visit the Prince’s Court and Prinsenhof Museum which is near to the church itself. Delft is also known for its Blue Delftware factory, you can visit this place to see how exactly they make this blue pottery.
   
   
   

Don’t forget to visit Cafe de Wilde Hollander while you are in Delft as it has got some good local dutch beers and a fantastic view!
