Weekend at Dinant – Caves and Forest

If you want to get away from the hustle bustle of the city life for a weekend, Dinant is the place to head to! I had planned to visit Dinant for exploring Kayaking options, but due to rainy weather we removed that option from our list. Nevertheless, Dinant was exactly how I imagined it to be — charming and picturesque, no matter how small of a town it is.

Dinant is a municipality in Namur that’s located on the River Meuse. It is located in the south of Belgium with French speaking Belgians.

We girls did a road trip, It is around 3 and half hour drive from Amsterdam. We started our journey on Saturday Morning and headed to Anseremme as we had our AirBnb close to that place. With nothing planned for saturday afternoon, After lunch(we walked into a Michelin Star restaurant and damaged our pockets) we just walked around the town. The side walk by the river was absolutely peaceful and Mesmerizing.

Located between Dinant and Anseremme, the Bayard Rock is a spectacular rocky needle that is about 40 meters high and this was quite a sight. Of course we clicked a lot of pictures with weird poses in front this huge rock!

Since we were in south of Belgium, that’s more hilly and speckled with more lush forests we had planned to visit Han-sur-Lesse Caves and Forest. It is a Walloon village in the municipality of Rochefort, Namur Province. It is famous for the exceptional caves carved under a nearby hill by the river Lesse. We took a Safari ride instead of hiking option due to the rains, but if you like to hike it has a beautiful trail. The small tram went through Lush green forest showing us some beautiful animals in its habitat.

Ticket: If you buy ticket online, its 29 Euros for both Park and Caves.

We had the most unforgettable trip in time walking through the caves of Han. The caves has been magnificently sculpted by the river Lesse which passes through it from one side to the other. Its truly beautiful to witness the colors and carvings of limestone. The tour guide spoke in French, Dutch and English explaining about each room. It was crazy to see how some of these formations looked like animals, city of Manhattan, Taj Mahal, Leaning tower of Pisa and so on. Since july, 2018 they have also included a sound and light show called Origins in the weapons room. Watching that just takes you to a different world.

Here’s a Glimpse of that video:

We wanted a relaxed weekend so we didn’t rush to see many other Monuments in Dinant. So will plan to go back there in Summer for Kayaking and visiting rest of the places we missed out on.
